    Greetings,

Georgia recently welcomed Mathias Hultgren, Economic Counselor at the Swedish Embassy, underscoring the strength of Swedish-Georgian business ties. During his visit, he met with local leaders from Cobb County’s Thomas Concrete and connected with business owners in sectors such as e-mobility and telecommunications.

Swedish companies have become a significant economic force in Georgia, with over 100 firms supporting nearly 12,000 jobs statewide. Nationally, Sweden invests more than $97 billion in the United States and directly supports over 379,000 American jobs—making it the 10th largest foreign investor and 6th fastest-growing.

In 2024, Georgia recorded a fourth consecutive year of export growth at $53.1 billion, spanning 219 global markets. The state now ranks as the 6th largest in total trade at $198.7 billion (up 6.4%). Civilian aircraft remained the top export at $12.6 billion, and the Port of Brunswick became the nation’s leading roll-on/roll-off facility for automotive and heavy equipment.

Georgia’s business-friendly environment, strategic location, and innovative spirit continue to attract Swedish investments, paving the way for further growth in emerging sectors like artificial intelligence, fintech, and healthcare. As bilateral ties deepen, both Georgia and Sweden stand to benefit from these robust and expanding partnerships.

In an insightful discussion with Stefan Harrigan, Senior Manager of Global Business Development for the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce (MAC), we explored how MAC plays a crucial role for international companies aiming to enter the US market. Harrigan revealed how the Chamber streamlines the complexities of establishing operations, helps businesses leverage Atlanta’s extensive resources, and opens doors to Georgia’s top-notch logistical infrastructure. From navigating regulation to local business integration, MAC offers comprehensive services designed to drive global growth. Discover how partnering with MAC can be your gateway to success in the US market.

What advice would you give to a company that is considering entering the US market?

For companies considering the US market, tapping into both government and private sector resources is essential. Regardless of the region they are exploring, businesses of all sizes—from small startups to large corporations—will be able to find resources. At the Metro Atlanta Chamber, we assist companies of all sizes in navigating the establishment of operations in Atlanta, stressing the importance of early engagement with business resources. Many businesses come to us later in their journey, realizing too late the value of the support we could have provided from the beginning.

Thorough research is also crucial; entering the market with uninformed perceptions can cause companies to focus their efforts on markets or regions that may not meet their strategic needs. Evaluating the importance of factors like talent availability, cost structure, customer access, and logistical connectivity helps businesses identify suitable markets and ensure a more successful entry into the US market.

Why should companies looking to expand in the US consider establishing in Atlanta?

Atlanta stands out as a dynamic market for US expansion. Through strong value propositions in many areas, Atlanta meets diverse business needs with high standards. Where access to talent is a key concern for businesses, Atlanta excels in talent acquisition, featuring a wealth of skilled professionals across various fields, supported by strong workforce retention programs and one of the highest growth rates among major metro areas. Atlanta's logistical advantages further enhance its appeal for foreign companies. Being home to Delta Air Lines and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport—the world's busiest airport—provides unparalleled national and international connectivity.

Georgia's Port of Savannah, one of the fastest growing ports and largest container terminal in the US, along with its extensive freight rail network, home to major railways such as Norfolk Southern, solidify the state's role as a key logistics hub. This combination of talent, resources, and infrastructure makes Atlanta a strategic choice for businesses entering the US market.

What services does the Metro Atlanta Chamber offer for companies entering the US market?

The Metro Atlanta Chamber, which is a private non-profit, offers free comprehensive economic development and networking services to businesses. Our Global Commerce Team offers specialized guidance to help international companies navigate the complexities of establishing a US presence while connecting them with essential resources, such as law and accounting firms, and local international business communities, including binational chambers and consulates.

For companies seriously considering relocating to Atlanta, our Project Management Team facilitates tours of office and warehouse spaces, as well as connects businesses with local universities and development authorities to access talent and integrate with the local business community. Our Ecosystem Expansion Team, composed of industry experts, supports companies in navigating local industries, fostering networking opportunities, and offering strategic business insight.

How does the Metro Atlanta Chamber adapt its business development strategies to work with a diverse range of companies?

MAC is committed to expanding its partnerships and global network, leveraging Atlanta’s status as a hub for trade offices and consulates. Atlanta is often an attractive destination, but in recognizing that governments often have limited resources, we will travel abroad not only to develop connections, but to tell the story of our organization and how we can help companies enter the US market.

MAC provides important information to both companies and governments about key considerations for entering the US market. By strengthening relationships both domestically and internationally, we ensure that businesses are well-informed and prepared for strategic market entry.

Can you describe one of the Chamber’s recent initiatives that successfully increased global outreach?

One of MAC's key initiatives is the Metro Export Challenge, the largest collaborative global economic development initiative. In partnership with the Georgia Department of Economic Development, local chambers, and economic development authorities, the program supports ten small to medium-sized US enterprises looking to expand internationally.

Participating companies receive an initial grant and tailored consulting services from various partners to develop their international strategies and export plans. The program features a “Shark Tank” style pitch day where five finalists present their plans in front of judges and a live audience to compete for additional funding—$15,000 for first place, $10,000 for second, and $5,000 for third—along with flight vouchers from Delta Air Lines.

This initiative aims to boost the international presence of US companies, strengthen existing industry bases, and support the resiliency of well paying jobs in the international marketplace.

How does the Metro Atlanta Chamber build and maintain relationships with global partners? Have you ever worked with Scandinavian companies?

Building relationships is an ongoing effort, especially in government trade offices and consulates where employees rotate frequently. In re-developing and maintaining these relationships, we get to meet a wonderful range of people when visiting with colleagues both domestically and abroad. This proactive approach ensures that Atlanta remains at the forefront of emerging opportunities. Whether it’s through major trade conventions or our own initiatives, we engage our international counterparts to take advantage of these opportunities.

MAC has a notable track record with Scandinavian companies, such as Danish firm Kamstrup, which recently nearly doubled its US operations, and SAS, which now offers direct flights from Atlanta to Copenhagen, further strengthening our ties with the region.

From redefining innovation and reliability to cutting-edge corporate travel solutions in the airline industry, discover how SAS has evolved to meet the demands of today’s global business landscape. Jasmin gave us an insider look into SAS’ exciting network expansion and new partnership with Delta Air Lines as part of the SkyTeam alliance. Read more to see how traveling with SAS can benefit you and your company.

Can you tell me about your experience at SAS? How has the company developed and grown over the years?

My journey at SAS has been nothing short of transformative. Having had the opportunity to work across various departments, I've gained a unique perspective on the company's growth and adaptation in such a rapidly changing industry. When I first started, the aviation landscape was entirely different—there were no low-cost carriers, no alliances between airlines, and loyalty programs were unheard of. Each airline operated independently, without the intricate networks we see today. However, the most significant shift I've observed is the role of technology. The addition of the internet, smartphones, and apps has revolutionized the way we serve customers, making our services more accessible and enhancing the overall travel experience. As we look ahead, I believe the industry will continue to evolve at a rapid pace, driven by AI and other emerging technologies. SAS has always been at the forefront of embracing change, and I'm excited to see how we continue to innovate in the years to come.

Why is flying SAS the best choice for corporations looking to expand their business internationally?

Our airline is renowned for its exceptional service and hospitality, which extends from on the ground at the airport, to onboard our flights. For businesses, we offer effective solutions to streamline travel management and control expenses, ensuring a cost-efficient journey. In addition to our travel management services, we are dedicated to sustainability. For companies based in Scandinavia or those looking to enter the Scandinavian market, our airline embodies the spirit of the region. Flying with us provides an authentic glimpse into what Scandinavia truly represents.

What inspired SAS to create direct flight options from Atlanta?

We’re constantly refining our network to ensure it meets the needs of our customers, partners, and business with both breadth and competitiveness. Our recent expansion to include Atlanta underscores this commitment, fueled by our strategic partnership with Delta Airlines. Delta’s extensive reach across the U.S., Latin America, the Caribbean, and Mexico significantly boosts our connectivity. With Atlanta as a major hub, alongside key locations like Boston, JFK, and other U.S. cities, we are now better positioned to seamlessly connect travelers between the Americas, Scandinavia, and Europe.

What business-oriented amenities does SAS provide to enhance travel efficiency for companies?

Our corporate program called SAS for Work offers a free, flexible solution for corporate customers of all sizes, designed to reward frequent travel with discounts. The more your company travels with us, the greater the savings and benefits, including enhanced membership status. Additionally, our corporate booking tool empowers businesses to handle their own travel arrangements, manage bookings, and track employee travel data effortlessly. Complementing this, our app provides a streamlined travel experience, making it an valuable resource for corporate customers flying with SAS.

How will the new airline alliance with SkyTeam and new flights from key U.S. cities benefit corporations in the US?

SkyTeam, the global airline alliance, is expanding its reach with the addition of our airline as its 20th member. Partnering with Delta Airlines, one of the largest carriers in the U.S., we will enhance connectivity throughout the United States and beyond. This collaboration will significantly boost our network, offering travelers even greater access and seamless connections across the globe. We’re thrilled about this expansion and look forward to delivering an even more comprehensive and connected travel experience.

Why should direct flight options be a major factor for corporate clients when selecting an airline?

Direct flights are a game-changer for companies, offering both increased efficiency and a more sustainable travel option. We're excited to introduce a host of new direct routes, enhancing convenience and reducing carbon footprint for our customers.

How do you account for industry trends that could impact supplier and sales relationships in long-term decision-making for SAS?

We continuously track and analyze macro-trends and environmental shifts to stay ahead of changes that affect our business and customers. This proactive approach extends beyond sustainability, ensuring we adapt swiftly to emerging developments and maintain our leadership in a dynamic market.

How does SAS make reliability a priority for their international travel services?

Safety remains our top priority, and we never waver on this commitment. Next is punctuality—our team is dedicated to ensuring that flights depart and arrive on schedule, meeting the high expectations of our customers. Timely departures are only part of the equation; we’re equally focused on ensuring that passengers' luggage reaches its destination smoothly. Dependability in these crucial areas is essential to our service. These partnerships are crucial as they allow us to offer comprehensive, cutting-edge solutions tailored to the specific needs of our clients.

What is the process from start to finish, from when a client approaches you to when the service is delivered?
